Lifts without machine rooms

Lifts without separate machine rooms. The drive assembly (and the control unit) are located – depending on the manufacturer – at the crest or at the base of the hoistway.

The advantage of locating the drive on the bottom of the hoistway (the pit) is that the valuable top floors are not penetrated and hence protected from noise and maintenance tasks – the engine can be accessed without having to cross any apartments (e.g. Penthouses).
